Sergeants case

One of my Instagram followers was recently celebrating being promoted to Staff Sergeant in the USAF. I thought it would be a good idea to make him a case that would protect his pens no matter where he takes them.

I started with a kydex shell on the left the two shells on the right were going to make the pen slots however I decided to make different ones which I will come to later.

After I had formed the kydex shell I placed it back on the mould and formed the wet leather over the top of it until I have this

it was a picture of this insignia that caught my attention and I thought it would look good as a carving in the leather.

After the initial carving there is a little cleaning up required.

Once I was happy with the carving I applied some nay blue dye. In this picture you can see the front piece with the carving as well as the rear panel with front flap along with the securing strap.

After giving some thought to the colours I decided to go with red suede for the inside.

I tried to cut the back panel and marked out the holes and shape accordingly to save a little time in the next steps, however this did not work and I ended up making a new back panel.

After making a new back panel I cut a piece of Kydex to form the back support. I then covered it in red suede. The pen slots are created by folding two strips of kydex I use the suede to hold the two pieces together.

The next stage is to apply glue and use mini clips to hold the two pieces together.

Once the glue has dried I removed all of the clips and had marked out the stitching holes followed by stitching the case.

After stitching I started trimming the case to the correct size.

After trimming the case to size I sanded the edges and started finishing the edges by  applying dye once the dye has dried I will smooth the edges and apply bees wax to seal the edges.

After finishing the edges and giving this case a final polish before taking these final pictures. The way the Kydex has been shaped and joined together makes this case incredibly strong. I believe this is the strongest case that I make.
