Triple Emperor brogue style

This commission is for a triple emperor fountain pen case with a brogue pattern I have made such a case previously so I decided to make a new brogue design.

I started with a piece of grey board drawing out a pattern inspired by a different pair of shoes.

I used my circle tool to form the shape with guide lines. The circle tool has marks on it to help line it up.

When I was happy with the design I transferred the layout lines to the mould to allow me to position the template accurately in later stages.
I stepped out the holes with a pair of dividers rather than spending time trying to fit the holes into the design, I decided how big the holes should be and how far apart I wanted them. then setting the dividers I marked out the holes and ended the holes where it looked right. This is much easier than deciding the length and trying to fit the holes into it.

The lines of holes (red) could have continued one or two more but once it looked right to me I stopped.
The next step was to try the design on leather.

While I was working out the design I had placed a piece of veg tanned shoulder into the mould and clamped it down tight.

Using the layout lines I placed the template on top of the mould I used some tape to hold it in place.

I then used a 1.5 mm hole punch to make the holes. Leaving the leather in the mould although it was now dry

While doing this I also formed some pieces of Kydex into an arched shape to form the pen slots. like this..

Here is my first trial fit

The strap that holds the flap in place has a small loop in one end to allow a tracking device to be added. I also realised that the front panel was not fully supported especially as I had punched a number of holes in it.
To resolve this issue I formed a new piece of kydex and wrapped it in the same suede.

The next step was to apply some dye I used an antique paste which is normally applied after dye but a light finish was required so I just used the antique paste on its own.

I think it turned out OK. Time for assembly.

After gluing it was time to make some stitching holes. You can also see my first choice thread Barbour 4 cord linen thread.

The idea here is to stitch the lower half fitting the strap which will then allow me to work out the shape of the flap.

I wont bore you with all of the details but it took some time to work out the exact shape of the flap.

I got there in the end without wrecking the whole case like I have done previously

Ignore the small piece of Kydex that is for another case for a really small pen.
I wanted to put the loop on the right side and it some how ended up on the left side I did not think it was a big issue but when I looked at the thread I realised the colour was wrong. So I unpicked all of the stitching and started again.
Here I have turned the strap the correct way around and re stitched the case with the darker thread.

Almost finished
