I am making a pen case to carry three standard size pens, it will also carry a custom pen rest and have an additional loop to allow a tracking device to be attached.

I started by making the pen slots from flat kydex sheet that I heated and moulded over a custom form.

After forming and trimming I wrapped the kydex pieces in suede

From the dimensions of these pieces I was able to work out the size of the pen rest that could be accommodated.

I made a sample from plywood which seemed to work quite well.

The test pen is a M B 149 which is larger that the largest pen the case is designed to hold.

As the test was successful I then made one from oak

I wanted a dark colour so I made an ebonising solution from white vinegar and steel wool, this reacts with the tannins in the oak and turns it black. While it was soaking I also made some extra ones for fun.

First I made some extra oak ones

And then some in sapele

When I ad finished playing with wood I started forming the outer leather cover.

It takes time to form the leather to the required shape.

At first I used a block of wood to form the leather over

I the shape developed I sealed the three pen slots in plastic and used them to form the remainder of the cover.

Time to add some dye Navy blue so dark it is almost black.

I formed a loop in one end of the strap

The next step is assembly bringing all the pieces together first with glue then with stitching.

I stitched the lower section and the strap in place along with the loop.

When the lower part was stitched I could make the template for the flap

I used the template to mark out the stitching lines and stitched the rest of the case together.

Once the case was trimmed I smoothed and dyed the edges leaving the finished case.
