Starting with flat materials I cut a strip of kydex and used a hot air gun to heat it up and form it around a piece of dowel. I welded the seam and rounded over the base.
Having finished the tube I cut some emerald green suede and stitched around the bottom about 1 cm from the edge. This acts like a cushion for the pen if it is dropped into the tube.
The maximum diameter of the pen is 18 mm so I am using an 18 mm dowel to make sure the pen will fit.
While I was waiting for the glue to dry I started preparing the outer cover.
The outer cover was pre formed around the tube whilst wet and before it was dry I applied some chocolate brown dye. The wet leather absorbs the dye much better than dry leather.
After applying glue to the lining tube and the outer cover I brought the two pieces together and applied some pressure using a special clamp that I have adapted for leather work.
After trimming and shaping the edges of the lower section I started to form the upper section around the lower part.
The upper section was trimmed and shaped in the same way as the bottom section before the edges were dyed and polished.
The final step was to add the hand made toggle / pen rest, disc with the owners initials and the little antiqued gold coloured end pieces for the thong that links everything together.
It is extremely satisfying to take flat materials and create a three dimensional object that will protect a precious fountain pen.
